Kindergarten

The children are all busy practicing for their Spring Festival to be held on the last day of Term 3, Wednesday 23 September at 10am. Children come to school with their parents at 10am on that day. After the festival we will share morning tea together and then children may head home with their parents or continue on to the Primary Festival under their parents’ supervision or with their teacher. We hope to see you all with us on that day to celebrate the arrival of Spring.

This week the children enjoyed a folk tale of The Boy and Girl in the Clouds. On Wednesday, the children modelled in beeswax, the animals who tried to rescue the children from the rock that had mysteriously risen into the clouds. The children developed and refined their modelling skills during the year and the details they can bring to their work is outstanding.

The full-time Kindergarten children picked up their mouse craft project and work is underway again with resumed gusto.

The rolling of “Seed balls” were the focus of this week’s gardening session with Annie.  Balls of clay and seed raising mixture were combined and rolled into balls with seeds hidden on the inside. Annie has taken these balls to dry out, with the idea that the balls can be placed in the garden and left for a time when the right kind of rain falls to bring the seeds to life. A wonderful Springtime project and great gift idea.

Enjoy your weekend,

Francine and Isabella

Class 1/2

During our Main Lesson we have been hearing about more adventures from Celtic Tales and King of Ireland’s Son. We have been practicing speaking in chorus with enthusiasm and learning the words for our play. We’ve also been focusing on drama skills and voice projection each day.

Gardening with Annie this week was lots of fun, some children planted corn, pumpkin and zucchini plants and others moved and spread mulch!

Thank you to Francine and Martin for accompanying us on our excursion to Burgess Falls. A beautiful day exploring our environment.

Enjoy the weekend,

Kath

Class 3/4

This week marks the end of Circus Skills on a Friday. We have had a wonderful time with Stewart. He has a great fun, kind and clear manner with the children. We are lucky to have him come and teach the children circus skills and hope to have it again next year. Sometimes I need to remind students to be respectful of Stewart with how they talk to him and listen to instructions, both because it is the right thing to do and also because we want to represent our school in a positive light. Of course, most students always show their best selves or can be redirected to do so quickly.

We explored sweet spring stories in Main Lesson. We looked at the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival and imagined ourselves on a picnic under blossoms. The message of the festival is the blossoms are ephemeral, fleeting and short lived, and we need to live our best lives. We also explored two Aboriginal stories – The Wandaguli (Wattle) Sisters, and Budbri (the Lyrebird) Learns to Dance: The Story of how the Lyrebird taught the People to Dance. All these tales have captured our imagination and deepened our connection to country and spring.

Next week is camp, and it feels a lot to think about. We have done a recce to the pine forest with Martin and there is a grassy clearing (we never knew existed) behind it, perfect for our “base camp”. Our general ever-evolving plan is simply to live in the space for the two days, playing, singing, telling stories, eating, going exploring, performing some forest/bush concerts, resting and no doubt having meetings to sort disputes. Very real-world community stuff. Most camps can feel overscheduled and kids really like a chance to “playhouse” with their peers and have time to settle. I want to ensure it isn’t too leisurely or too pressured and fast paced.

Have a good weekend.

Class 5/6

It’s been an active week this week, with Cross Country on Monday and The Grand Canyon walk on Tuesday. Congratulations to everyone who participated in these activities. It was great to see everyone taking part and going just that little bit further than they thought they could. Getting past those mental and physical barriers nurtures our ability to push through when things feel a bit hard.

Thank you again to Sarah who came in to guide us through the second session on our two-point perspective drawing of the Greek Parthenon, another type of challenge which is teaching us drawing and observation skills.

Next week will be our last Food Stall for the term. I’d like it if the children could make cakes, biscuits or savoury snacks that we could sell at Morning Tea next Thursday. Please send them in on Thursday, with an ingredient list. We have been raising money for the Year 6 Farewell, and I’d like to thank everyone for contributing.

Spring Festival is on the last day of term.

Have a lovely weekend,

Julie

Yesterday my class went on a bushwalk called the Grand Canyon. In the middle of the walk, we walked along a very small walkway next to the canyon. It was amazing! You could hear the rush of water as it swirls and bubbles over nooks and crannies. It was at leas more than 5 metres deep. The ferns had grown on almost very surface. I absolutely loved it.
