Kindergarten
Welcome everyone to a new school year!
This week Kathryn Tang (Classroom Assistant) and I have been settling our six full time Kindergarten students into the routines of the Kindergarten.
We have enjoyed a few wonderful days getting to know each other and exploring aspects of the school grounds together.
Thursday and Friday was our opportunity to get started on learning how to blanket stitch. The children are now working on their first craft project, sewing a family of fish to create a class mobile.
Please reserve a space in your diary for our Parent/ Teacher night – Wednesday 18th February at 7 pm. This evening event is for adults only and I allow 1 hour for discussion and sharing. Time beyond this hour, is set aside for chatting, so parents who need to head home by 8pm can.
Kathryn and I are so excited to be working with your children, and we welcome everyone to our beautiful Kindergarten and look forward to our younger friends (Little Kindy children and Isabella Jaworski) joining us next week for more fun and adventures together.
Warmly,
Francine O’Dea and Kathryn Tang

Class 1/2
Welcome to our 2026 Class 1/2 families! It was a delight to see all the children back at school this week. A focus of the first few days has been building relationships and routines, and it seems as if we have been together as a group for much longer than three days.
Thank you to the families who were able to attend the welcome Morning Tea on Wednesday morning, it was a beautiful opportunity to support each other and get to know other members of our community.
On Wednesday, the children took advantage of the glorious sunny weather and took on a building project in the sandpit. There were various areas built and then remodelled. Class 1/2 worked together to make waterways, lakes, tsunamis, islands and tunnels. We were impressed with their cooperation as the children bonded and remembered how fun it is to spend time with friends.
Our first Main Lesson of the year is learning how to draw forms in nature and symmetry while exploring our school and bush environment. Nature stories, bush walks and exploring our own bush playground provides endless opportunities to explore the curve of a leaf or waves in tree bark. Our rich curriculum is alive at Blue Mountains Steiner School.
Thank you for your support as we begin a year of exploration and love of learning.
Warmly,
Kath

Class 3/4
Welcome back to the 2026 school year and to Class 3/4.
The first few weeks is very much about settling and establishing rhythms, routines and expectations. This is what provides the most regulated and calm state for children to learn and play. Knowing what to expect and what each day and subject looks like most of the time, reduces the cognitive load of constant change and unpredictability, but also allows a steadiness that can adapt to unexpected changes like a rainy day or a friend being away, developing resilience and flexibility. All of that sounds very serious. When in practice it feels very warm.
Our first Main Lesson is Shalom Chaverim, Peace friends. Here we begin to explore the stories and culture of the Hebrew tradition. Throughout the years of schooling the students explore all the major world myths, beliefs and history. This is presented in the same way as our Norse studies last year. With respect for those who hold these stories dear, and with an open heart where learning about others and the beauty of difference produces kind and balanced humans.
I feel there must be practical things I should say…. but they elude me. So, for now, best of luck as you move out of holiday mode and feel into your own family weekly rhythms again for the school year. Come and see me any morning or afternoon or drop an email if you have anything you want to chat about.
Warmest Week 1,
Regards Jeneva

Class 5/6
Welcome everyone to Term 1!
It has been a solid start to the term for our class. I can already feel the two age groups becoming one! Our first Main Lesson is called ‘Painting Pictures with Words’ and it is a creative writing unit. We will work on descriptive language, tenses, similes and metaphors (for the older group), poetry and lots of recitations. Alongside this Main Lesson, we will revise and keep working with fractions and decimals and times tables.
This term we have Meredith assisting in the class in the morning sessions and Rowena will be with us two afternoons a week for painting and craft. Mare will be taking violin and cello on Thursdays beginning in Week 2. I will send out a class calendar next week.
I would like to thank Soumya for taking the class on Friday as I had a family commitment.
Please check the weather for Hazelbrook as many of us live up or down the mountains and there can be quite significant temperature differences. Sunhats, cool clothes which are sun safe, water bottles and shoes appropriate for our bush playground are the way to go.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a lovely weekend,
Julie
