Kindergarten/Boronia Room

In preparation for our Winter Festival on Friday 20th June, the Kindergarten children started work on their Winter Morning Circle this week. We are now singing about King Winter who is walking the land, bringing chill and cold.

The children’s lanterns are being constructed from their paintings and the Winter Festival songs are being practiced and learnt, building excitement and anticipation for our nighttime lantern walk and Winter Spiral.

Next week, Parent /Teacher interviews will be conducted on Monday 16th June and Wednesday 18th June. Please try to remember your time slot and attend your interview on time. Mid-Year Reports for the full time Kindergarten children will be handed out at this meeting.

I look forward to seeing all our families at the Winter Festival next Friday 20th June, at 5.30 pm. This is a celebration not to be missed.

Warm regards,

Francine

Class 1/2

Our mathematics-focused Main Lesson continued this week. We have been counting and recording large numbers of objects, practicing our combinations to make 10 or 20, skip counting, collecting data and graphing fruit found in our lunchboxes. Class 1/2 went for a walk down Clearview Parade to explore odd and even house numbers. We learned that some blocks of land are larger than others and numbering usually begins at the end of a road nearest the post office, numbers also increase as you move away from the post office along the street.

The spelling focus this week has been ‘ck.’ There have been many silly sentences created involving backpacks, ducklings, cracks, and tracks. We used games on the ballcourt and chalkboards to help explore our words.

Our Health lesson this week involved learning about resilience. We understand that often things do not go to plan, and it is important to have a plan b or even plan c. We can practise being flexible, managing our emotions and accepting change. We are flexible humans in Class 1/2!

Class 1/2 has been singing our Winter Festival songs, and we made good progress on our lanterns this week. Class 2 used their beautiful, oiled paintings and rulers to accurately measure in centimetres, carefully folding edges with steady hands. Well done Class 2!

Enjoy the weekend and stay toasty.

Warmly,

Kath and Class 1/2 Assistants

Class 3/4

In Class 3/4 the Norse Myths Main Lesson continues to be enthralling. We heard a creation story and are now enjoying getting to know the characters from this world. We started with Odin with his 8-legged horse, and star-covered deep blue cape, sacrificing an eye to drink from the springs of all the world’s knowledge. After each of these stories we are writing in our own words and drawing gorgeous pictures. Doing both of these things and exploring the curriculum deeply and slowly is one of the real joys of this method of learning.

In Morning Circle, we are learning Viking songs and verses and using staves to embody a strength of spirit that is beautiful to witness in the young children.

We continue to work on our lanterns and practice the songs for the festival. Every minute of the day seems a buzz of activity.

Fortunately, the days have felt sunny and still this week, and despite the chill, the children are having lovely playtimes at recess and lunch.

Enjoy your weekend.

Jeneva and Meredith

Class 5/6

As we continue with our Geometry Main Lesson, the content naturally flowed into Ancient Greek philosophers as they were pretty interested in science, maths, and the meaning of life! Pythagorean theorem has just been glimpsed with the creation of the Fibonacci or Golden Ratio spiral… this is leading us into our new ML- Ancient Greece…cannot wait!

The children are enjoying their daily maths practice and have been revising and extending in decimals and percentages. In small groups, the children are working either with myself or Minh in areas of maths which they are interested in or have unanswered questions. It is great to see how enthusiastic and engaged the class is with all things mathematical.

I write this on the eve of our FUTSAL Gala Day – more news on this next week.

The Class 6 children are in the throes of fire stick rehearsals and all of the class are busily making their lanterns for our Winter Solstice Festival.

This week we have had Jenn assisting the class whilst Lee is away. Thank you so much to Jenn for her support in the class and also send Lee best wishes for a speedy recovery.

In these colder months, the children tend to be extra hungry. Packing a bit more food, particularly food that can sustain their energy for a good amount of time would be great. Also, depending on where you live… please consider that the temperature in Hazelbrook is much cooler than the lower mountains. Some children have been feeling the cold and need a few more warm layers of clothes.

Have a lovely weekend.

Stay cosy!
